New indie bookstore: The Stately Raven

statelyravenstorefront.jpgStill working away toward the book deadline, so no new reviews for you. But I do want to take a minute to tell you about this cool independent bookstore that Brandon and I discovered. It opened last August in Findlay, Ohio, just across the street from the University of Findlay/Winebrenner Seminary campus (where Brandon is teaching these days). We hadn’t noticed it before because it is cleverly hidden in a beautiful old church—though the giant book statue out front should have prompted a second glance at the historic building!

The Stately Raven has a really good fiction section, by which I mean they have all the best books I’ve read plus all the books on my TBR list—and not just single copies, either, but a small supply of many of the titles I would push on anyone shopping with me. Same goes for the classics section. A good number of science, art, sports, cookbooks, nature, local history, etc. books too. The small but surprisingly rich religion section even has several P&R titles! Clearly, this shop has a knowledgeable buyer. I was amused to find a modern Christian fantasy series in their “scary room” along with more “traditional” (if that word applies) sci-fi and dark fantasy titles.

With a fireplace area on the ground floor, a comfortable reading loft above the main stacks, a roomy children’s area with rocking chairs in the basement, and darkly-charming murals invoking Poe throughout, it’s definitely not your big-box bookstore experience. We’re planning to go back for a lengthy browse one of these days. It’s a good thing they don’t serve coffee, or else we might be tempted to hang out there too often!
