Last week’s theme: feathers

cupcakes-for-blog.jpgI’m not really behind in reading, just behind in posting reviews. So I’ll be getting to those eventually. In the meantime, last week while I was making these adorable nesting baby bluebird cupcakes and eyeball-deep in assorted other tasks for my sister’s bird-themed baby shower (held on Saturday and photographed by dear Rachel), the American Library Association was announcing the Newbery and Caldecott awards. Note that one book given the Newbery Honor Award is The Wednesday Wars (about a kid learning Shakespeare) by Calvin College professor Gary D. Schmidt. Another Honoree is Jacqueline Woodson’s Feathers, already on my TBR list as it is inspired by the Emily Dickinson poem, “Hope is the thing with feathers/ that Perches in the soul.”

Another thing inspired by ED’s feathers is this gorgeous birthday present I received from Rachel (photography is only the latest of her skills)—you must see it!

But enough about last week. This week I’m finishing The Tomb of the Golden Bird, the 18th volume in Elizabeth Peters’ Amelia Peabody series. I’m also reading Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet (a Christmas present) and Sadie Jones’ The Outcast (an ARC of a March debut). What is everybody else reading this week?
