Kite Runner film delayed

scene-new-film-kite-runner.jpgKite Runner fans will have to wait a few weeks longer to see their beloved bestseller on the big screen. Originally scheduled for November 2, the film has been delayed until at least December 14 because of concerns for the safety of the child actors, who live in Kabul. There seems to be a bit of controversy over whether or not the actors and their guardians knew the film would include a rape scene (the father of the boy who plays Hassan says he wasn’t told, but the director says he was present at a rehearsal of the scene); and recently-heightened racial tensions in Afghanistan have raised the possibility of violent backlash. The studio is delaying the film’s public release until the actors’ families are temporarily relocated.

CNN’s announcement of the delay can be found here; details about the father’s objections and the studio’s subsequent revisions appeared in this earlier story.

What’s your reaction (after reading up on the situation)? Should the studio have used American actors, or was it the right decision to use Afghan nationals? Since the actors were paid for their work, does the studio owe them relocation or other protection?
