DSC_0141_SMSpring has finally and completely sprung here in NW Ohio, and I am overjoyed to have dirt under my fingernails again.  The poppies (pictured here), forget-me-nots, clematis, and weigela are bursting with blooms, and the gorgeous rose hedge I planted last year is absolutely covered in buds.  May is certainly the gardener’s month!

But since my back can take only so many hours of planting and weeding, I’m happy to report that I’ve been working away at my to-read list as well.  I checked off another title in my deep reading project of Shirley Hazzard’s works, this time her early novel The Evening of the Holiday, which reinforced my opinion of her as a master at weaving atmosphere.  After enjoying Steve Martin’s An Object of Beauty, I picked up a couple more of his books at a used bookstore; Picasso at the Lapin Agile is a clever play in which Einstein and Picasso meet in a bar in 1904, and his novel The Pleasure of My Company is a tender and hilarious story that convinced me I need to finish reading all of his books.  Sarah Vowell’s critical-but-warm hearted Unfamiliar Fishes had me laughing and cringing and laughing again; watch for a short review in the near future.  The Coffins of Little Hope by Timothy Schaffert is my latest love from the always-excellent Unbridled Books.  And I’m currently burrowing into Caleb’s Crossing, the latest by Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Geraldine Brooks.
