If I had to sum up Yann Martel’s new novel in one word, it would be “grim,” which is not to deter readers but to prepare them.  In scope, if not in length, Beatrice and Virgil rivals Martel’s previous novel, Life of Pi, with its necessary and answerless questions and its cast of bizarre characters.

A warm welcome to all the homeschoolers new to this blog. I was homeschooled through high school with my 4 siblings, so you will surely find a kindred spirit in my mother!

Speaking of this blog, tomorrow marks its (her?) 1st birthday. One year of disciplining myself to read, process, and discuss outside the borders of book club. The experiment has become a lifestyle. Thanks for all the comments!

CNN reports that novelist William Styron, author of Sophie’s Choice, died Wednesday.
