Clippings 23: which do you want first?

I always want the bad news first; lay it on me so I can deal with it and then salve my soul with the good news. So here it is: one of my favorite independent bookstores, Shaman Drum in Ann Arbor, Michigan (I’ve mentioned it here several times) is closing shop, victim # I’ve-lost-count of the recession.

The good news is that, though it’s getting harder to find great indie shops in which to discover new books and authors, those authors are still out there writing amazing new stuff.  Exhibit A: Emily St. John Mandel, whose debut novel Last Night in Montreal I discovered on Twitter.  Haven’t read it yet (the stores near me don’t have it), but I loved the excerpt posted on Emily’s site and enjoyed this podcast interview with her by Vromans Bookstore — an indie shop! (By the way, Mashable has a list of 100+ authors on Twitter, if you’re interested in following.)  Have you discovered a great new author recently?  Please let me know.  I’m particularly fond of first novels — there’s something about the discovery process, getting in on the ground level and keeping up with each new book, that thrills me.

And every once in awhile, a good book becomes a (hopefully good!) film.  Now that I’ve seen this trailer, the one I’m waiting for this summer is The Time Traveler’s Wife, based on the novel by Audrey Niffenegger that Brandon and I read aloud a few years ago.  Will you be watching it?
