If I had to sum up Yann Martel’s new novel in one word, it would be “grim,” which is not to deter readers but to prepare them.  In scope, if not in length, Beatrice and Virgil rivals Martel’s previous novel, Life of Pi, with its necessary and answerless questions and its cast of bizarre characters.

Clippings 9: I heart my readers

Posted By Mindy on February 14th, 2008

flower-book-small.jpgI’m not big on Valentine’s Day, but I am kinda a fan of love…so here are a few links in the spirit of this mother-of-all-Hallmark-holidays:

Sarah Moffett lists her favorite “love stories,” including at least one of mine (curious? see my comment there).

Superfast Reader describes “falling out of love” with a favorite author. (I wish I had fallen in love with Umberto Eco—alas, he’s never done a thing for me…)

Poets.org pairs wine, sweets, and flowers with romantic poems, including my all-time favorite love poem “somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond” by e. e. cummings (why it ranks has something to do with my sweetie’s lefty handwriting and a slip of paper in my college post box…).

According to my Google search, February is Library Lovers Month. George Mercer Dawson said, “A great library contains the diary of the human race.” Of course, just like your lover (assuming he/she is worth your love!), “a truly great library contains something in it to offend everyone” (Jo Godwin). So either give your librarian a smooch or visit this website for info on library advocacy.

And, yeah, I do heart my readers. So who wants to buy me this t-shirt?
