Books and other reasons to be thankful

A belated Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! We had 24 people at my Mom and Dad’s for our holiday dinner, and it was a loud and delicious time. Two highlights of the festivities were learning that our precious foster niece and nephew are permanently joining the family (their case worker called on Thanksgiving morning as soon as she read the court report!); and spending three days talking non-stop with our dear friends Mike and Rachel who drove out from Philly to be with us. Part of our connection with these friends is that they are as literature-obsessed as we are, so of course books featured prominently in our weekend. We dropped in to two big box bookstores as well as drove up to Ann Arbor to introduce them to a favorite used shop (The Dawn Treader) and indie bookseller (The Shaman Drum). I was trying not to notice too many new titles since I still have quite the stack waiting for me, but it was futile and now I have a nice Christmas list to hand over to my in-laws at their request. god-with-us.jpgAnd Rachel spotted a beautiful, newly-published book of Advent readings by some favorite poets, God With Us: Rediscovering the Meaning of Christmas. It’s just the sort of book I am looking forward to introducing to our now “forever niece” and “forever nephew” when they are a bit older.

Today is a rainy Monday and it is back to the computer. This week I am reading Miroslav Volf’s The End of Memory: Remembering Rightly in a Violent World, and Alexander McCall Smith’s In the Company of Cheerful Ladies; and I’ll be posting a review of Lori Smith’s A Walk with Jane Austen. What are you reading?
