Mourning Madeleine
CNN reports that Newbery Medal-winner Madeleine L’Engle died yesterday at the age of 88. Most of us know her from A Wrinkle in Time, her remarkable fantasy novel, but I also highly recommend her Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art. Her official website has not yet been updated with the announcement of her death.
I don’t know why, but I always thought of her as one of those accessible writers I might get to meet someday at a reading or conference—but it never happened, so I’ll have to be content to chat with her in eternity. Were you a fan? What were your favorite works?
UPDATE, Sept 11: I can’t believe I forgot to mention her delightful picture book, The Other Dog–about a little dog who becomes confused and jealous when her family brings home some “other dog” with no hair, wrapped in a blanket, and insisting on eating throughout the night–beautifully illustrated by Christine Davenier. This has long been a favorite item in my collection of picture books.
Also, I have discovered a helpful overview and theological analysis of L’Engle’s writings by English professor Donald Hetting in the Books & Culture online archives.
UPDATE DEUX, Sept 21:Â Read a lovely tribute to Madeleine by her dear friend and fellow poet, Luci Shaw, posted today at ChristianityToday.com.
