If I had to sum up Yann Martel’s new novel in one word, it would be “grim,” which is not to deter readers but to prepare them.  In scope, if not in length, Beatrice and Virgil rivals Martel’s previous novel, Life of Pi, with its necessary and answerless questions and its cast of bizarre characters.

An anniversary contest

Posted By Mindy on July 30th, 2007

bookplate.jpgToday is our 13th wedding anniversary, so naturally Brandon and I have been thinking back over some of the challenges and accomplishments of these years. Together we have: completed 4 degree programs; lived in 5 states (for a current total of 9 moves); participated in the life of 5 Christian churches; started a non-profit ministry and a home business (both of which lasted only a few years!); collected roughly 500 books; learned to live with 2 chronic illnesses (we’re an egalitarian couple, so one for each of us); and written 6 books, 4 of them as co-authors. And we still like each other! God is good.

So in celebration of our joint writing accomplishments, I’m announcing a contest! The first 13 friends who write an Amazon review of one or more of our History Lives books will receive an autographed bookplate. Here’s how it works: Post your review at Amazon, then email me (contactATmindywithrowDOTcom) and tell me which book(s) you reviewed. Include your mailing address and the name of the person you want us to sign the bookplate to (you? your kids? a gift recipient?). If you’re among the first 13, we’ll send you an autographed bookplate so you can attach it to a copy already in your possession.

Thanks for celebrating with us. Happy reviewing!

UPDATE, Aug 4: Thanks for the interest so far, dear readers.  We’re not up to 13 yet, so it’s not too late to win a bookplate!  I’d especially love to see some reviews of books 2 and 3…

Hi Mindy,

I just finished reading through Monks and Mystics and was eager to see what other books you have written in the History Lives series, which has led me to your website. I don’t know that I made the first 13 cut, but I was happy to leave a review of the book. It was great, and my 10 year old son is enjoying it almost as much as I have. I also had to respond to this “contest” as my husband and I also celebrated our 13th anniversary this year.

I look forward to reading more of your work!

Thank you,
Christy North
