Speaking of used bookstores

dawn-treader-pic.jpgApparently the antidote to too much book writing is shopping for more books. That’s what Brandon and I did yesterday for our first official post-book vacation day. The weather was so nice, we decided to drive up to Ann Arbor (not quite an hour north of our summer residence) and hang out in one of our favorite university towns. Of course there were boutiques and coffee shops and paper stores, but our first stop was the landmark bookstore known as The Dawn Treader. Every book lover in Michigan should go there. I spent about an hour climbing up and down stepstools in fiction, and then repeated the second hour in women’s studies, British biography, and religious studies. I never even made it to mysteries, because the lure to walk out in the sunshine was too great. For budget reasons we resisted buying too many volumes, but did get a few good ones at reasonable prices. Our time out in the fresh air was sporadic, due to the number of other great bookstores in that area—including the original Borders—but it was great to stretch our legs and snag a few new items for the TBR pile, now that I can get back to it again.

Speaking of used bookstores, I rank The Dawn Treader up there with other such greats as Powell’s in Chicago and Bookman’s Alley in Evanston. What are your favorite places for used books (walk-in shops, not online only)?
