If I had to sum up Yann Martel’s new novel in one word, it would be “grim,” which is not to deter readers but to prepare them.  In scope, if not in length, Beatrice and Virgil rivals Martel’s previous novel, Life of Pi, with its necessary and answerless questions and its cast of bizarre characters.

In-flight reading

This afternoon Brandon and I are flying to Philadelphia, where he will defend his PhD dissertation on Monday.  I am confident I’ll be bringing a Dr. home with me next week!  With a 3-hour layover in Cincinnati today, you can bet we’re packing reading materials.  I hope to finish The Secret of Lost Things by Sheridan Hay, which I started a few weeks ago and then set aside because it wasn’t grabbing me.  It had mixed reviews, so I want to see it through to the end and decide for myself.  I’ll let you know what I think.
