If I had to sum up Yann Martel’s new novel in one word, it would be “grim,” which is not to deter readers but to prepare them. In scope, if not in length, Beatrice and Virgil rivals Martel’s previous novel, Life of Pi, with its necessary and answerless questions and its cast of bizarre characters.

Who knew that after 15+ years of reading that magazine that my own very talented daughter would be quoted therein! Oh, the excitement of turning to page 63 and seeing that!

All in a day’s work, my friends…which is something I need to put in, a day’s work that is. Hopefully this little quote won’t be the only thing I have to show for all my recent days of typing in my pajamas!
