Reading records

my reading journalBookgirl recently asked her readers if they keep track of who recommended certain books, and if so, what method they use. This raises the broader question of how we organize our reading lists. I carry a reading journal with me. Three-quarters of the book is for making notes on books as I read (noting title, author, and date read); the last section is for listing books I want to read, with a brief synopsis and how I heard about the book. Because I am a serious list maker, I also keep an Excel spreadsheet of books I’ve read, for the joy of being able to sort by date read, author, or genre (I find this helpful for analyzing my reading habits).

Do you keep a record of your reading? Tell me about your method—us list makers love a good tip! And just for fun, let me know what book(s) you’re reading this week, too. My current stack is: The Echo Maker, Richard Powers; Simply Christian, N.T. Wright; and Reading Like a Writer, Francine Prose.
