McFarquhar vs. Superman

The Sand CafeMy brother-in-law is a movie NUT.  If it released in an American theater, he’s seen it, and if it meets his minimum required number of explosions (which might be only 1, if it’s nasty enough), he owns it on DVD.  So for several years now we’ve been exchanging DVDs for Christmas.  This year, at his request, he’s getting Superman Returns.  I, on the other hand, have decided to break tradition, and asked him to venture into the vast unknown of the book section at Media Play for a copy of Neil McFarquhar’s The Sand Cafe.

I’ve been wanting to read The Sand Cafe since I heard NPR interview the author this summer.  The publisher describes the book as “a fierce, funny debut novel of journalists at war—or waiting for one that never quite arrives—based on the Gulf War experiences of a renowned New York Times correspondent.”

Someone please confirm that this was worth a place on my Christmas list…
